Skaak is ‘n spansport – ons noem dit ‘n sport omdat ons wedstryde speel en aan toernooie deelneem.
Skaakspelers kom om 14:30 elke Dinsdag in die biblioteek bymekaar. Mrs Goslett and Mrs Bornman coach the beginners and intermediate players.  Mr André Roux coaches the intermediate and advanced players.  All players have the opportunity to play for a place on the ladder, and therefore have a fair chance to play in the league team (10 players per team).

Beginners and intermediate class: Basics are taught to all players. Those who know how to play chess do a few warm-up exercises with the whole group and then challenge one another.  Kinders wat nie weet hoe om skaak te speel nie, gaan voort met basiese onderrig.

Intermediate and advanced class: This class is for those who can already play a competitive game of chess. The focus is on providing children maximum exposure by playing competitive games for position on the ladder, whilst always remembering to still have fun. Specific coaching is given on more advanced aspects, such as special moves, opening strategies and end-game aspects. There is also the occasional mate-in-1 challenge or chess in the computer lab to keep learners keen on finding new ways to enjoy the game.

Ons speel ons vriendelike wedstryde in die winterkwartale.  Sewe skole kom elke Vrydagmiddag bymekaar en elke kind kry die geleentheid om ten minste drie wedstryde te speel.  Tien tot vyftien spelers word op ‘n roterende basis gekies.

The league team is made up of ten players who play fixtures, which are set up by WP Schools Chess.
