Our Kids Lit Club invites keen readers in Grades 5, 6 and 7 to become members. We meet every Tuesday in the Library for an hour after school. Our meetings involve sharing reviews of books we are currently reading, discussing authors, doing individual and team quizzes, organising the annual National Book Week drawing competition, and celebrating special days such as Harry Potter Day etc.
Each year, we enter the Kids’ Lit Quiz. This Quiz is a major international literature competition where teams of four students work together to answer wide-ranging literary questions. Students collaboratively answer 100 questions arranged in ten categories. The questions in the heats are answered by pen & paper, while the Final is answered orally by the fastest team on the buzzer.
This Quiz, like our Club, celebrates and rewards reading and literary knowledge.
- It offers reading challenges
- It broadens literary awareness
- It fosters positive attitudes towards reading
- It motivates students to read
- It provides a literary focus for schools to extend their students’ reading mileage and knowledge of literature
Regional Heats are held in each participating country, with the winners competing in National Finals. The World Final is then held mid-year. In 2026, the World Final will be held in New Zealand in July.
Kenridge Primary School began entering teams in this competition in 2019, and in 2020, our 1st Team won the Cape Town Regional Heat and placed 3rd in the National Final in Johannesburg. In 2025, our 1st Team again won the Cape Town Heat and placed 2nd in the National Final.
In March 2026, our two teams competed in the Cape Town Heats with a record 40 teams, in extremely uncomfortable conditions during a heat wave! Despite the heat, we placed 3rd and 5th, missing qualifying for the National Final by one point. We are so proud of these learners for representing Kenridge with such grit and enthusiasm. Our teams were delighted to have ex-Kenridge learners, Andrew Peters and Kairon de Jager, members of last year’s winning Kids Lit Team, at the competition to support them.
